We now have more details from Facebook on Bonny's life and passing:
Self-professed lover of life and Proud Lifetime Texas-EX, Bonny Buchanan Terry, passed peacefully in her sleep on 4 December 2024, 71 years young. Her departure marked 11 months and 11 days from the passing of her true love and husband of 32 years, ‘Papa’ Richard Terry. Both are deeply missed.
A woman of many passions, Bonny lived a life full of joy, curiosity, and laughter. She never shied away from adventure, whether it was helping keep Austin weird, embarking on an impromptu trip to Mexico, or diving into new creative projects.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, to Lt. Colonel Dee Curtis “Buck” Buchanan and Marjorie Mae Maxon, Bonny Sue was the fourth of six children, with a special bond to her fraternal twin, Becky Lou. Their childhood was full of adventure, taking them from Texas to Panama, where a kinkajou designated itself an unofficial family member, seeding Bonny's love of nature. Back in Texas, Bonny attended MacArthur High School where she was a champion swimmer, earning over 100 medals and competing in trials for the Pan-American Games. She maintained a lifelong connection to the water, through swimming, sculling, or simply insisting that every vacation include a beach.
While attending MacArthur, Bonny met her high school sweetheart and eventual first husband. As a Navy wife, she moved across the United States raising two children, Julia Anne (Indiana) and Conan McHugh (Washington State) but quickly found her true home in Austin.
Bonny’s life in Austin reads like a greatest hits album full of vibrant, unforgettable moments like limo rides with ‘The Police’, late-night listening parties at Guitar Resurrection, free summer concerts along Town Lake, or exercising along the Hike & Bike Trail. Bonny truly lived Austin to its fullest, eventually meeting the love of her life, Richard.
However, life in Austin wasn’t just about fun and excitement—Bonny was also intelligent and driven, pursuing her passions & career with determination. Despite being a single Mom, she earned a BA in Marketing from the University of Texas (Austin) and studied Art at Parsons School of Design (New York City). Professionally, Bonny worked at Gary job Corps in San Marcos before transitioning into a role for the State of Texas,(Austin), from which she eventually retired. Throughout it all, Bonny never lost her love for reading and storytelling, often weaving tales with a level of detail that would rival Dickens.
Bonny is survived by her children, Julia McHugh & Conan McHugh; sisters, Mardee, Marilyn, twin Becky, brother Billy; and nieces Danica, Laura, Tina, and Alex. She was preceded in death by her beloved Richard, parents, “Buck” & Marjorie, and brother, Dee Curtis, Jr.
Bonny’s life will be celebrated on January 24, 2025, at 11:00AM, at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery (2800 Hancock Drive). A celebratory luncheon will follow, details to be shared at service.
Bonny’s beautiful, artistic, intelligent, and sometimes complicated nature left an indelible mark on all who knew her; we are forever grateful for the love, laughter, mystery, and imagination that she infused into our lives. One of the last notes Bonny wrote to herself included advice for us all: “Laugh hard. Share your kind spirit. Treasure those you love.”

I did some hanging out with Bonny (and Becky and Simone). We all shared home room together. I was quite the "goody two shoes" so I didn't always fit into their fun, but they put up with me! When we were seniors, Bonny decided one day we must all eat at Church's Fried chicken on the Austin Highway. Did we seek permission? Of course not. At lunch time four of us walked into the parking lot, piled into her car and blithely left campus. We parked and ate chicken in her car, and returned before the bell. We walked back onto campus as if nothing happened and never got nailed. I felt oh so wild and evil!!
